Another quiet morning with another load of laundry started. Eggs and rice for breakfast.
We set out a little after noon - to the Bahnhof for newspapers. Then up to the Pfleggersee. Ron took an unusal route, and we ended up in some back roads of Garmisch we'd never seen before, nor desire to see again - such as the Recylcling Depot and other industrial areas. We approached Pfleggersee from a new direction, and saw more beautiful homes We love the traditional Bavarian architecture.
The road up is narrow and scary, and is in very bad condition. It needs total resurfacing. Part of the way up we were following a truck that was apparently doing some work on the roads.
Ron drove right up to the restaurant, and dropped me off. He decided he would just park right there unless someone complained. We believe you are supposed to park in the lower lot quite a distance away.
We sat on the terrace, a bit anti-climactic after being on Lake Geneva, Lake Como, Tegernsee, and La Concha Bay! But, it's a pleasant little mountain lake, and a place we always enjoy visiting. People were out in crowds enjoying the lake. We have probably been there in summer before, but don't recall. It was much busier than we are used to - lots of folks sunbathing on the opposite bank, people swimming, paddle boarding, etc.
Ron had gulashsuppe (very meaty) followed by a salad with shrimp. I had a tasty asparagus soup with almond cream, which was quite yummy. This was followed by grilled chicken strips on a bed of creamy noodles. Nothing special. Ron feels there is an older generation of Germans who have some resentment toward Americans, and that our waitress was one of those. Her attitude was a bit surly, and we had to track her down to ask for everything. We have been at this locale for years and years, and never felt this way before. Maybe it's Ron's imagination.
We drove up to Eibsee (where the cable cars and train set off for the Zugspitze peak). We were looking for someplace COOL, as temps has risen into the mid 90's. The hotel directly on the lake used to be an AFRC (US Armed Forced Recreation Center). In the 60's, soldiers could stay there for about $3.00 a day (BUT, that was sharing a room). Since being returned to the Germans it was a Holiday Inn and is now a 4-star hotel not affiliated with a name brand.
The most interesting thing is that the old Zugspitze cable car (a very scary ride almost vertically up the mountain) is being replaced with a new one, a state-of-the-art $50 million Euro project. It is to be ready by December 2017
The area around the hotel was busy, you have to pay for parking, and a long walk so we drove back down to Grainau It is sort of sad to see all the places we used to WALK, and seeing the countryside by car is just not the same.
We turned off to go to the old Badersee Hotel (another place we have walked to). It has been modernized. The Badersee is a very TINY mountain lake. We were watching a dog determined to catch a duck. The poor dog must have been asthmatic, as you could hear it laboring to breathe as it swam along, but it did not want to give up.
Pictures are all on my broken laptop......
