June 13 - Back to Evian

Breakfast was the typical bread and cheese. There were also scrambled eggs, which were very undercooked to our taste, but that is the way the French always serve them. It was rather breezy, but we were still able to sit by the pool - a pleasant setting to start the day.

We did some work on the computer, and made reservations to stay at the Hilton in Evian that evening. It had been exactly one month ago that we had checked in there for a five-night stay.

Left the hotel at 10 AM, and had about a three-hour drive. It was great coming back into the greener areas and seeing the Alps once again. A spectacular sight! We programmed Margencel into the GPS, hoping to try La Jolla restaurant that the concierge had talked about last visit. The signal on the phone wasn't strong enough for me to be able to open their web-site or find their phone number. Margencel was a bigger town than we realized, and we ended up high in the hills, and we needed to be directly on the lake shore. Finally, I was able to use MAPS on my phone, and it took us to the restaurant. Ron stopped in a parking lot a bit above, and I walked down while he squeezed the car into a tiny space. Unfortunately, Tuesday was the "ruhetag" for La Jolla, and it was closed. I hollered at Ron that I would walk to Le Leman (where we had lunch last month), and see if it was open. He said he would move the car down beyond the restaurant.

Le Leman was busy, but they were able to offer a table. We shared a bottle of dry Savoie wine and a huge platter of sautéed lake perch, fries and salad. It was all good. Just enjoyed the experience of sitting directly on the lake, and taking in the scenery.

We then continued on to the Hilton and checked in. We had requested a room close to the elevator, so we didn't have one of the fabulous rooms at the end of the hotel wing directly on the lake. But, it was still lovely, and a much easier walk.

We went to the Executive Lounge and sat on the terrace, trying to adjust the umbrellas for some shade, as the Sun was HOT! We chatted with a couple who live in Melbourne FL, but were from NC. They had been on a Tauck river cruise, and said Tauck was fabulous.

A hotel car took us to the casino, and we played for about an hour. I stayed exactly even. Ron was way ahead at one point, but think he finished near even or maybe behind. The new game I have taken a liking to is called "Dark and Stormy".

The hotel van picked us up and we returned to the hotel. We watched "The Wall" in French, and Ron was impressed I got so many answers correct. It seemed I could understand a lot more of the questions (and answers) than he could. Although I find it impossible to speak French, I can read quite a bit.

The king-size bed and the linens were superb, especially compared to some of the places we had slept. It felt so luxurious and comfortable. I need these particular sheets at our new house! Ron asked if he should put them in our suitcase. Hah! A great night's sleep!
