April 21-23 A ROUGH day at sea and then back to calm

Friday (April 21) we had 15-foot seas and 35+ mph winds. We hadn't felt any motion for the first several days, but even as enormous as the Eclipse is, on this day we felt it seriously. I had brought some acu-presssure wrist bands for Ron and Dramamine for me. We didn't really experience sea-sickness, but it was definitely NOT a good idea to try to read or do a crossword puzzle with all of that motion. Could feel a headache coming on, and decided it was best to lay down!

I had an appointment for an 11:45 manicure in the Canyon Spa- another result of a "shill". We had been waylaid and offered free hand rub the previous evening. Of course we succumbed, and then when the woman saw how terrible my cuticles were, she talked me into booking a manicure for the next morning at "in port" prices, a serious discount.

With the ship rocking, I would rather have stayed in the bed Friday morning, but knew there would be a cancellation charge if I missed my appointment. So we set out to walk to the elevator bank and up to the 12th floor Canyon Ranch Spa. With my knee and hip problems, and joints that don't bend, balance is even more difficult. I felt like I was going to topple over. But, we finally made it.

The manicurist tried to charge us a rate much higher than we had agreed to, but once Ron mentioned it, she quickly corrected the bill. The windows in the beautiful salon afforded a panorama of the high seas around us. By the time my appointment was finished, the manicurist was beginning to feel the effects of the high seas. She kept saying, "I am feeling strange.."

We proceeded to the Oceanview Café, planning to get a bowl of soup. I couldn't walk across the floor without holding a hand rail, let alone holding a bowl of soup. Ron's balance is not that much better. He found us a table near the food stations, and he carried back two bowls of soup. Meanwhile I had found a beautiful baguette, and a few other items. Ron then brought delicious veggie Indian noodles. The freshly baked bread is amazing!

That evening Ron wanted to go out again, but I wanted to stay in and not worry about falling, so I had an early evening, and he went out to the casino and bar.

Saturday morning the seas were calmer, but still not the "glass" we had experienced the first few days. We had lunch in the Moonlight Sonata - a repeat of an earlier menu, and we both chose steak.

We then attended a matinee performance by the singer, Jeri Sager.

Sunday marked one week since we sailed from Miami, and  we continued our shipboard routine - collecting the small "newspapers" put out at 10 AM each morning, and settling into a comfy chair at the Passport Lounge for a lovely coffee with Baileys and whipped cream.

The days pass quite uneventfully, and we are enjoying the peace, relaxation and even the tedium. There is no change of scenery for days - only the horizon and not even another ship crosses our view. I am busy on the computer part of each day, ordering things needed for the house renovation and planning and rearranging our time in Europe. We have cancelled our three-day stay in Lyon, and will probably change the dates for Burgundy to allow more time in Spain. We are starting to think about the best way to get "home" - we don't have tickets booked yet.

Meanwhile, the contractor reports that the granite counters have been removed from the kitchen and the "breakfast bar" lowered. Now that the new sink and faucet have been received, the template will soon be made for the new quartz countertops. My next project is ordering a barn door and hardware to replace the master bath door. The faucets and counters have been chosen for the bathroom, and it will be totally re-tiled and a new lip-free shower built.

The afternoon and evening are filled with planned activities - most of which we disregard, sticking to our books and puzzles, visits to the slot machines,  and chats with other guests.

That evening we attended another show in the Eclipse Theater - a performance by UK vocalist, Peter Grant. The show wasn't nearly as good as Jeri's but kept us out of the casino for an hour! Ron did have a good night at the slots - won back most of what I have lost.
